This awe-inspiring spectacle features thousands of participants, from monks and drummers to children and elaborately decorated floats, all illuminated by the glow of the lanterns. The parade route stretches 3 kilometers along Jongno Street, starting from Heunginjimun Gate and ending at the iconic Jogyesa Temple.
As I jostled through the crowds to find the perfect spot to watch the parade last year, the excitement was palpable. My daughter had a blast walking in the parade with her Cub Scout pack, and I can still remember the look of pure wonder on her face as she was surrounded by the mesmerizing lights and rhythmic beats of the festival.
But the Lotus Lantern Festival is more than just the parade. There are a plethora of other events and activities that take place throughout the week, each offering a unique window into the rich cultural heritage of Korea.

On the Saturday evening following the parade, the Hoehyang Hanmadang celebration takes place at the Jonggak Intersection. If the crowds at the Hoehyang Hanmadang prove to be a bit too much for your liking, you can head to the street in front of Jogyesa Temple for a more intimate celebration. On Sunday, May 12th, the Cultural Activities and Cultural Performances take place, offering visitors the opportunity to try their hand at making lotus lanterns, enjoy traditional Korean music and dance, and immerse themselves in the spiritual and cultural aspects of the festival.
And if you’re still not quite ready to say goodbye to the Lotus Lantern Festival, you can join the Yeondeungnori parade on Sunday evening, which winds its way through the streets of Insadong, followed by a final celebration to cap off the festivities.
