Raging in the “Beverly Hills” of Seoul
I’ll never forget the first time I stepped foot in Gangnam. It was August 2013, and I had just moved to Seoul to teach English. On my very first weekend, my Korean friends dragged me out to these legendary nightclubs, and let me tell you – I was not prepared for what was in store.
Imagine a world where the energy of Las Vegas, the trendiness of Stockholm, and the sheer madness of Bangkok all collide into one epic party hub. That, my friends, is Gangnam. This upscale district in the heart of Seoul is renowned for its lavish nightlife, where the rich and famous flock to dance the night away in some of Asia’s biggest and baddest clubs.
I quickly learned that Koreans take their nightlife very seriously. In fact, South Korea consistently ranks as the country with the highest alcohol consumption per capita in the world. And let me tell you, they know how to party hard. Whether it’s downing shots of soju (a popular Korean rice liquor) or getting lost in a sea of sweaty bodies on the dance floor, the Gangnam nightlife scene is an absolute riot.
The Clubs of Gangnam
As I mentioned, Gangnam is home to some of the most epic clubs in all of Seoul. And trust me, I’ve been to my fair share of wild nightlife scenes around the world. But nothing, and I mean nothing, compares to the sheer insanity of clubbing in Gangnam.
Let me take you on a tour of my top 7 favorite clubs in this bustling district:
1. Octagon
Octagon is hands down my favorite club in Seoul. In fact, it was even ranked the 6th best club in the world by DJ Mag. This place is an absolute monster, with multiple levels, a gigantic DJ stage, and a mesmerizing light show that’ll have you dancing until the sun comes up. I’ve seen some of the biggest international DJs perform here, from Laidback Luke to Fedde Le Grand. And the energy is just off the charts – I challenge you to try and stand still while you’re in this place.
2. Club Answer
If you’re looking to party with Seoul’s young, sexy, and crazy elite, then Club Answer is the place to be. This three-story club is dripping in luxury, from the leather seating to the chandelier-adorned ceilings. But don’t let the fancy decor fool you – this is where the real ragers come to let loose. Huge names like Deadmau5 and Benny Benassi have graced the stage here, and the dance floor is always packed with beautiful, well-dressed Koreans getting down to the best in electronic music.
3. Syndrome
Syndrome is the talk of the city every single weekend. Seriously, this place is absolutely insane. With a capacity of over 2,000 people, it’s one of the biggest clubs in Seoul. And get this – there’s even a swimming pool inside! The main dance floor stretches the entire length of the club, and the DJ stage is positioned right at the front so you’re never too far from the action. I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve stumbled out of Syndrome at 6 AM, still buzzing from the non-stop energy of the place.
4. Ellui
If you thought Syndrome was big, wait until you see Ellui. This club claims to be the largest nightclub in all of Asia, and after one visit, you’ll understand why. The multiple levels and dance floors are absolutely massive, and the light show and sound system are out of this world. I’ve seen the staff literally stand on the bar and pour shots of vodka directly into the mouths of the raging crowd. And trust me, you’ll be joining in on that action before the night is over.
5. Club Base
For a more high-class, luxurious clubbing experience, head to Club Base, located inside the Ritz-Carlton hotel. This place is the definition of opulence, with an 18th-century ballroom-inspired interior and neon-drenched dance floors that’ll have you feeling like you’re raving in a futuristic palace. The music might be a bit one-note, but the scene and vibe make up for it tenfold. Just be prepared to spend a pretty penny on those drinks.
6. Club Mass
If you’re the type who can rage until the sun comes up, then Club Mass is your place. This club stays open 365 days a year, going strong until 9 or 10 in the morning. The electro-house beats just keep pulsing, and the young, beautiful crowd keeps dancing. I’ve stumbled out of here at 9 AM on a Sunday, still buzzing from the night before. It’s a scene you have to experience to believe.
7. The A Hall
Last but not least on my list is The A Hall, which is known for attracting some of the biggest EDM DJs in Korea. I’m talking names like Kaskade, Fatboy Slim, and Ferry Corsten. The layout of the club isn’t my favorite, but the energy and the world-class talent that graces the stage make it a must-visit. Just be prepared to get a little cozy with your fellow revelers – this place gets packed to the brim with people ready to rage until the break of dawn.
Navigating the Gangnam Nightlife
Now that you’ve got the scoop on the top clubs in Gangnam, let me share a few tips to help you make the most of your nightlife adventure in this vibrant district.
First and foremost, be prepared to spend a pretty penny. Gangnam is the “Beverly Hills” of Seoul, after all. Cover charges can range from $20 to $40, and drinks will cost you no less than $10 each. If you want to save some cash, get sufficiently buzzed beforehand at a local convenience store (soju is only about $1 per bottle!) and then head to the club. Or, if you’re rocking a big group, splurge on a table with bottle service – the experience is well worth the extra cost.
Dress to impress, but don’t stress too much. While the clubs in Gangnam tend to be a bit more formal than other areas of Seoul, the dress code is not strictly enforced. I usually opt for a simple v-neck, black jeans, and some clean sneakers. Just avoid shorts and flip-flops, as you’ll likely get denied entry.
And remember, timing is everything when it comes to clubbing in Gangnam. Don’t even think about showing up before midnight – you’ll be the only one there. These clubs stay open until the very last person walks out, which is usually around 7-9 AM. I’ve had my fair share of 10 AM walks of shame back to my hotel.
Exploring Beyond the Clubs
Of course, there’s more to Gangnam than just its legendary nightlife scene. This trendy district is also home to some of Seoul’s best shopping, dining, and cultural attractions.
Start your day (or, let’s be real, afternoon) with a stroll down Gangnam-daero, the main thoroughfare that runs through the heart of the neighborhood. Here, you’ll find high-end boutiques, sleek cafes, and towering skyscrapers that rival the glitz and glamour of Manhattan. Be sure to snap a photo in front of the iconic Gangnam Style statue – a must-do for any first-time visitor.
When hunger strikes, head to Garosu-gil, a charming tree-lined street lined with some of Seoul’s trendiest eateries. Indulge in authentic Korean barbecue, slurp down steaming bowls of spicy tteokbokki, or try your hand at some kimchi-making at one of the many cooking classes on offer. And don’t forget to leave room for a scoop (or three) of creamy Korean ice cream.
For a deeper dive into Korean culture, visit the Bongeunsa Temple, a stunning Buddhist sanctuary that dates back to the 9th century. Marvel at the ornate pagodas and intricate murals, or simply find a quiet spot to meditate and soak in the serene atmosphere – a refreshing contrast to the non-stop energy of the Gangnam nightlife.
