Seouls Hottest Nightlife in Gangnam

Partying like a K-Pop Star in Seoul’s Glitzy Gangnam District

I’ll never forget the first time I stepped foot in Gangnam, Seoul’s most glamorous and vibrant nightlife district. It was August 2013, and I had just moved to South Korea to teach English. Every weekend, I found myself drawn to the electric energy and neon-lit clubs of this neighborhood, nicknamed the “Beverly Hills of Seoul.”

Clubbing in Gangnam wasn’t just a hobby – it was a way of life. The Koreans I befriended had an insatiable thirst for partying that put even the most dedicated Las Vegas revelers to shame. They would drag me out until the sun rose, dancing like maniacs to the latest K-Pop hits and electronic dance music bangers.

Even after all these years, I can still vividly recall the adrenaline rush of those wild nights in Gangnam. The pulsing beats, the sea of beautifully-dressed partygoers, the extravagant bottle service – it was like stepping into another world, one where anything seemed possible.

The Epicenter of Seoul’s Party Scene

Gangnam is the undisputed center of Seoul’s vibrant nightlife scene. This affluent district, made famous by the ubiquitous “Gangnam Style” song, is home to some of the city’s most exclusive and high-energy clubs.

According to travel blogger Drew Binsky, Gangnam is where “all the celebrities and rich folks hang out and spend ridiculous amounts of money.” But it’s also a hub for young 20-somethings who want to party until the break of dawn.

The clubs in Gangnam are on a different level entirely. We’re talking massive dance floors, state-of-the-art sound systems, and VIP sections that would make even the most jaded Vegas partygoer green with envy. And the dress code? Let’s just say you’ll want to leave your flip-flops and shorts at home.

A Night Out in Gangnam

So, what can you expect when you venture out for a night of debauchery in Gangnam? Get ready for an experience unlike anything you’ve ever encountered.

First up, you’ll want to get suitably buzzed before even setting foot in the clubs. As Binsky notes, Koreans love to drink – they consume more alcohol per capita than any other country in the world. Grab a bottle of soju, the ubiquitous Korean rice liquor, and get your pre-game on.

Once you’re feeling good and toasty, it’s time to hit the town. The dress code in Gangnam is decidedly glam, so make sure you’re looking your best. No shorts or flip-flops allowed – you’ll want to don your finest going-out attire.

And don’t even think about showing up before midnight. As Binsky advises, “Clubs don’t even start getting packed until at least midnight or 1 AM.” The party animals of Gangnam aren’t exactly early birds.

Once you do make it past the bouncers and into the clubs, prepare to have your mind blown. These places are massive, with multiple levels, state-of-the-art sound systems, and – in the case of one club, Syndrome – even a swimming pool. The energy is electric, the drinks are pricey, and the dancing is, well, uniquely Korean.

As Binsky describes it, “Koreans love to get down to electronic dance music (EDM), with a style that involves a lot of shoulder shrugging, head bobbing, and uncontrollable fist-pumping.” It’s a sight to behold, I can assure you.

And the party doesn’t stop until the sun comes up. Binsky recounts stumbling home from a club at 10 AM on more than one occasion. These Koreans know how to rage.

The Crème de la Crème of Gangnam Clubs

Of course, not all Gangnam clubs are created equal. According to Binsky and other seasoned Seoul partygoers, there are a few that stand out from the pack.

Octagon

Binsky calls Octagon “hands down my favorite club in Seoul,” and it’s easy to see why. This place was ranked the 6th best club in the world by DJ Mag, and it regularly hosts huge international DJs like Laidback Luke and Fedde Le Grand. With its gigantic LED screens, state-of-the-art sound system, and multiple levels of VIP areas, Octagon is the epitome of Gangnam extravagance.

Club Answer

If you’re looking to party with Seoul’s young, sexy elite, Club Answer is the place to be. This multi-story club is known for its luxurious, leather-clad interiors and massive dance floor, where you’ll find the city’s most beautiful people getting down to the latest electro-house hits.

Syndrome

Binsky describes Syndrome as “the talk of the city every weekend,” and it’s not hard to see why. This place is absolutely massive, with a capacity of over 2,000 people. It even has its own swimming pool, because why not? If you’re looking to experience the sheer scale and insanity of Gangnam nightlife, Syndrome is the club for you.

Ellui

Speaking of scale, Ellui claims to be the largest nightclub in all of Asia. This place is so big that you can easily get lost in the sea of partying Koreans. But that’s all part of the fun, right? With its bouncing balls, crazy light shows, and international DJs, Ellui is the stuff of Gangnam nightlife legend.

A Word of Caution

Of course, with great partying comes great expense. Clubbing in Gangnam is not for the faint of heart (or the thin-walleted).

As Binsky warns, “Cover charges are typically $20-40 USD, and drinks are expensive. Expect to pay no less than $10 for any shot, beer, or mixed drink.” Ouch.

But if you’re looking to live it up like a K-Pop star, money is no object. Many clubs offer bottle service, where you can reserve an entire table and have a personal server bring you top-shelf liquor all night long. It’s a splurge, but the epic experience is worth it, according to Binsky.

And let’s not forget the dress code. While Gangnam clubs are more lenient than some of their counterparts, you’ll still want to leave the cargo shorts and flip-flops at home. As Binsky advises, “Just don’t wear shorts or flip-flops because you will get denied entrance.”
