As I stepped out of my hotel near the bustling City Hall, the towering Sejong Center for the Performing Arts came into view. But instead of heading straight for the palaces and museums, I decided to wander down a different path – one that would lead me to the heart of Seoul’s urban landscape.
Turning onto Saemunan-ro 5-gil, I stumbled upon a charming park and garden, its pathways dotted with intriguing statues. A “peace tree” stood tall, its branches formed by the word “peace” written in various languages. Across the way, a striking sculpture of singed wooden logs caught my eye, hinting at the artistic delights that awaited me.
Strolling the Cheonggyecheon Stream
As I continued my exploration, I eventually reached the Cheonggyecheon Stream, a hidden gem that flows right through the center of Seoul. Lined with pedestrian walkways and adorned with captivating art, this urban oasis quickly became the focal point of my wanderings.
The portion of the stream closest to City Hall was particularly vibrant, with colorful murals and lighting displays that came alive as the sun dipped below the horizon. Further along, the path became more serene, with verdant vines and nature taking center stage.
One of the most striking features was the illuminated waterfall, its cascading waters glowing in the night. As I strolled beneath the various bridges, I couldn’t help but stop and admire the creative murals that adorned their surfaces, each one a unique work of art.
Discovering the Neighborhoods
With the Cheonggyecheon Stream as my guiding compass, I ventured out to explore the surrounding neighborhoods, each one offering its own distinct charm and personality.
In the chic Sinsadong district, I stumbled upon Garosu-gil Street, a lively thoroughfare lined with upscale stores, cozy cafes, and the occasional mural. The ginkgo trees that stretched overhead cast a golden glow, adding to the elegant ambiance.
Further afield, I discovered the vibrant Hongik University neighborhood, a hub of youthful energy and creativity. Quirky cafes, art galleries, and bars dotted the streets, each one more unique than the last. It was a place that seemed to come alive at night, beckoning me to return and experience the full spectrum of its nightlife.
As I wandered, I couldn’t help but marvel at the diversity of Seoul’s urban landscape. From the traditional hanok villages to the modern, cutting-edge architecture, the city wove a tapestry of old and new that captivated my senses.
Stumbling Upon Surprises
One of the joys of exploring Seoul on foot was the element of surprise that lurked around every corner. Whether it was a whimsical mural, a thought-provoking statue, or a delightfully quirky cafe, there was always something new to discover.
In the Bukchon Hanok Village, I found myself captivated by the intricate details adorning the traditional Korean houses, from colorful murals to unexpected artistic touches. It was as if the city itself wanted to delight and surprise its wanderers at every turn.
Even the most ordinary structures, like the Samsung Jongro Tower, became sources of fascination. The hollow floors and the restaurant atop the 33-story building offered a unique perspective on the city, reminding me that there was always more to discover than meets the eye.

As my days in Seoul wore on, my feet became a little more worn, and my shoes a little more tattered. But the rewards of my wanderings far outweighed any physical toll. With each step, I uncovered new layers of this captivating city, from the vibrant street art to the hidden pockets of tranquility.
Seoul may not be known as the most walkable of cities, but I found that embracing the art of wandering was the best way to truly experience its essence. The subway may have been efficient, but it was on the streets, with all their surprises and delights, that I truly came to understand the heartbeat of this dynamic metropolis.
And so, I continued my explorations, always drawn back to the Cheonggyecheon Stream, a constant source of inspiration and respite. It was here, amid the flowing waters and the ever-changing artwork, that I found myself truly captivated by the magic of Seoul.
