Uncovering the Wonders of Seoul with My Family
As a proud Korean-American, I recently had the incredible opportunity to take my family on a trip back to my parents’ homeland of South Korea. Our destination? The bustling, vibrant city of Seoul – a mesmerizing juxtaposition of modern architecture and centuries-old historical palaces.
I’ll admit, I was initially a bit apprehensive about finding enough attractions that would appeal to my husband, three kids, two brothers, and 83-year-old father. However, my fears were quickly laid to rest as we discovered Seoul’s rich tapestry of cultural experiences, suitable for all ages and interests.
Gyeongbokgung Palace: A Step Back in Time
One of the must-see destinations on our itinerary was the iconic Gyeongbokgung Palace, a national landmark dating back to 1395 and the main royal palace of the Joseon Dynasty. As we wandered through the vast grounds, brimming with pavilions and ponds, my kids were captivated by the historical re-enactments and the mesmerizing changing of the guard ceremony.
But the real gem within Gyeongbokgung was the National Folk Museum of Korea, which housed an engaging children’s museum that my kids absolutely adored. We even opted to rent traditional Korean hanbok outfits, which granted us free admission – a unique cultural experience that the whole family thoroughly enjoyed.
Reaching New Heights at the N Seoul Tower
No trip to Seoul would be complete without a visit to the iconic 777-foot N Seoul Tower, a major landmark in the city. As we ascended to the top, taking in the panoramic views from one of the three observation decks, the kids were enthralled by the restaurants, shops, and the famous Love Lock Bridge.
My personal highlight was watching my kids and their 83-year-old grandfather place a lock on the bridge, symbolizing their eternal bond. It’s a memory that will forever be etched in our hearts, a true testament to the power of family and the magic of Seoul.
Immersing Ourselves in the Minsok Village
Another day trip that proved to be a true highlight was our visit to the preserved historical Minsok Village, located just a 45-minute bus ride from the heart of Seoul. As we stepped into this sea of thatched and tiled houses, we were transported back in time, witnessing firsthand how Koreans lived centuries ago.
The kids were captivated by the interactive performances and the chance to engage with artisans dressed in traditional hanbok attire. From watching a traditional wedding ceremony to enjoying musical performances, the Minsok Village provided a truly immersive cultural experience for the entire family.
And the fun didn’t stop there – the village even had a small amusement park, which the little ones absolutely adored.
Endless Delights at Lotte World Adventure
Speaking of amusement parks, no visit to Seoul would be complete without a trip to Lotte World Adventure – one of the world’s largest indoor theme parks and South Korea’s version of Disneyland (albeit on a slightly smaller scale).
From state-of-the-art rides and captivating parades to a massive ice-skating rink and a kid-friendly Korean cultural museum, this place had it all. My kids could have easily spent the entire day exploring the wonders of Lotte World Adventure, and I have a feeling they would have been quite content with that!
Discovering the Joys of the Seoul Children’s Grand Park
Of course, no family trip to Seoul would be complete without a visit to a park, and the Seoul Children’s Grand Park did not disappoint. This free, expansive green space was a delight for both the kids and the adults in our group.
From playgrounds and a zoo to a garden and even an amusement park (for an extra fee), the Seoul Children’s Grand Park had it all. My kids especially loved buying and making their own ramyeon (a Korean ramen dish) at the on-site convenience store, as well as exploring the array of famous Korean street food – the potato tornados sprinkled with cheese and candied strawberries on a stick were absolute winners.
And the pièce de résistance? The fantastic Seoul Children’s Museum, which captivated the imagination of every member of our family.
Embracing the Unexpected Delights of Seoul
As I reflect on our unforgettable trip to Seoul, I’m struck by how our initial worries about finding the right balance of activities for everyone quickly melted away. This vibrant city, with its rich history, modern marvels, and delightful surprises, proved to be the perfect destination for a family vacation.
From the grand, centuries-old palaces to the thrilling theme parks and the charming cultural experiences, Seoul offered something for every member of our diverse group. And, of course, let’s not forget the mouthwatering Korean cuisine that had us all coming back for more.
